In this additive color model, red, green, and blue light are combined in various proportions to create a wide spectrum of colors. Each of these primary colors is represented by a separate channel, which essentially stores information about the intensity of that specific color in a given pixel.

When you view an image on a screen or in a digital file, each pixel is composed of these three channels. The intensity of the red channel determines how much red light is emitted by that pixel, and similarly for the green and blue channels. By mixing these primary colors, a display can reproduce millions of different hues. For example, a pure red pixel would have maximum red intensity and zero green and blue. White is typically represented by the maximum intensity of all three channels, while black is represented by zero intensity across all channels.

Understanding RGB color channels is fundamental in fields such as graphic design, photography, video editing, and computer graphics. It allows for precise control over color reproduction and helps in troubleshooting color discrepancies. Software applications often provide tools to manipulate these individual channels, enabling adjustments to brightness, contrast, and color balance. The depth of each channel, often measured in bits per channel, determines the total number of colors that can be represented. For instance, 8 bits per channel (24-bit color) allows for 256 levels of intensity for each of the three colors, resulting in over 16 million possible colors per pixel.
