REACHsäädöksen

REACHsäädös, officially Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, is a European Union regulation concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals. Its full name in English is Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals. The primary objective of REACH is to improve the protection of human health and the environment from the risks that can be posed by chemicals. It places the burden of proof on companies to demonstrate that the substances they manufacture, import, or use do not adversely affect human health or the environment.

The regulation applies to most chemical substances manufactured in or imported into the EU in quantities of one tonne or more per year. REACH establishes a system where companies must register their substances with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). This registration involves submitting information about the properties, uses, and safe handling of the substances. The level of information required depends on the quantity of the substance. REACH also includes provisions for the evaluation of substances by ECHA and Member States, the authorisation of substances of very high concern (SVHCs), and the restriction of certain dangerous substances. The aim is to ensure that companies manage the risks associated with chemicals and to promote the substitution of SVHCs with safer alternatives.
