Röntgentähtitiede (Finnish for X-ray astronomy) is a branch of astronomy that studies celestial objects in the X-ray part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Unlike visible light, X-rays are high-energy photons that can penetrate interstellar dust and gas, allowing astronomers to observe phenomena that are otherwise hidden.

Celestial objects emit X-rays through various processes. High-temperature plasmas, such as those found in the coronas of stars or in supernova remnants, are a significant source of X-rays. Accretion processes, where matter falls onto compact objects like white dwarfs, neutron stars, or black holes, heat the infalling material to extremely high temperatures, producing intense X-ray emission. Gravitational interactions and collisions between celestial bodies can also generate X-rays.

Observing X-rays requires specialized telescopes that are placed in orbit above Earth's atmosphere, as the atmosphere absorbs most incoming X-rays. Space-based observatories like Chandra X-ray Observatory, XMM-Newton, and NuSTAR have been instrumental in advancing the field.

Röntgentähtitiede provides crucial insights into extreme astrophysical environments. It helps us understand the evolution of stars, the nature of black holes and neutron stars, the dynamics of galaxy clusters, and the origin of cosmic rays. The study of X-ray binaries, for instance, has been key to understanding mass transfer in stellar systems and the properties of compact objects. Supernova remnants, observed in X-rays, reveal the aftermath of stellar explosions and the distribution of heavy elements in the galaxy.
