Qismi

Qismi is a term used in several Turkic languages and in Arabic-influenced vocabularies to denote a part, portion, or section of a larger whole. The root is the Arabic qism (قسم), meaning division, portion, or share, and it spread into Turkish, Persian, and Central Asian languages through historical contact and scholarly exchange. In practice, qism and its inflected forms appear in administrative, legal, and literary contexts to designate subdivisions such as sections of a document, components of a composition, or divisions within an organization.

In languages such as Uzbek, Kazakh, and Uyghur, the word often occurs in formal discourse and may appear with suffixes that mark definiteness or possession, yielding forms that translate roughly as "the part" or "part of X" depending on grammatical context. The Latin transliteration qismi is common in academic and bilingual texts when representing Turkic pronunciations; other spellings may occur due to orthographic conventions, including qism or qismi with various diacritic marks.

Beyond its linguistic use, qismi occasionally appears as a surname or toponym in regions where the word has historical significance, reflecting the traditional association of a group or locality with a particular division. In modern dictionaries and linguistic studies, qismi is cited as a classic example of a loanword illustrating Arabic influence on Turkic and Central Asian vocabularies.
