Pöördmatrikside, or inverse matrices, are a fundamental concept in linear algebra. For a square matrix A, its inverse, denoted as A⁻¹, is a matrix such that when multiplied by A, it results in the identity matrix I. The identity matrix is a square matrix with ones on the main diagonal and zeros elsewhere. The equation defining the inverse is AA⁻¹ = A⁻¹A = I.

Not all square matrices have an inverse. A matrix that has an inverse is called invertible or non-singular. A matrix that does not have an inverse is called singular. The existence of an inverse is directly related to the determinant of the matrix. A matrix is invertible if and only if its determinant is non-zero.

The inverse of a matrix is unique if it exists. It plays a crucial role in solving systems of linear equations. If we have a system Ax = b, where A is a square matrix of coefficients, x is the vector of unknowns, and b is the vector of constants, then if A is invertible, we can find x by multiplying both sides by A⁻¹: A⁻¹Ax = A⁻¹b, which simplifies to Ix = A⁻¹b, or x = A⁻¹b.

Methods for finding the inverse of a matrix include Gaussian elimination (also known as the Gauss-Jordan method) and using the adjugate matrix. The adjugate method involves calculating the determinant and the matrix of cofactors. The inverse is then the transpose of the cofactor matrix divided by the determinant.
