Pääekosysteemityypit, known in English as major ecosystem types, refers to broad classifications of ecosystems based on their dominant environmental characteristics and the types of organisms that inhabit them. These classifications help scientists understand the global distribution of life and the interactions between living organisms and their physical surroundings. The two most fundamental categories are terrestrial ecosystems and aquatic ecosystems.

Terrestrial ecosystems are found on land and are primarily distinguished by climate, vegetation, and soil type. Major terrestrial biomes include forests (tropical rainforests, temperate forests, boreal forests), grasslands (savannas, prairies), deserts, and tundra. Each biome has a unique set of plant and animal adaptations that allow them to thrive in specific temperature and precipitation regimes.

Aquatic ecosystems, conversely, are found in water and are distinguished by salinity, depth, and water movement. These are broadly divided into freshwater ecosystems and marine ecosystems. Freshwater ecosystems include lakes, rivers, streams, and wetlands. Marine ecosystems, covering the majority of Earth's surface, include oceans, coral reefs, estuaries, and saltwater marshes. Factors like sunlight penetration, nutrient availability, and water chemistry are crucial in determining the types of life found in aquatic environments. Understanding these principal ecosystem types is fundamental to ecology and conservation efforts.
