Pyöröpolarisaa is a Finnish term that translates to "circular polarization" in English. It describes a type of electromagnetic wave, such as light or radio waves, where the electric field vector rotates in a circular path as the wave propagates through space. This rotation can be either clockwise or counter-clockwise, defining two states of circular polarization: right-handed circular polarization (RHCP) and left-handed circular polarization (LHCP).

In a circularly polarized wave, the electric field has a constant magnitude but its direction changes. Imagine a point on the tip of the electric field vector; as the wave travels, this point traces a helix in space. This is in contrast to linear polarization, where the electric field oscillates along a single line, or elliptical polarization, where the electric field traces an ellipse.

Circular polarization has several practical applications. In telecommunications, particularly in satellite communication and GPS systems, it is used to reduce interference between signals. This is because signals with opposite handedness of circular polarization can coexist in the same frequency band with minimal cross-talk. In optics, circular polarizers are used in applications like 3D cinema glasses, where they help separate images intended for each eye, and in scientific instruments for measuring optical activity. The phenomenon is also relevant in understanding the interaction of light with chiral molecules.
