Pyromellitic acid, also known as benzene-1,2,4,5-tetracarboxylic acid, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C10H6O8. It is a tetracarboxylic acid derived from benzene, with four carboxyl groups attached to the ring. In its pure form, it appears as a white crystalline solid.

The compound is sparingly soluble in water but more soluble in organic solvents like ethanol. Pyromellitic acid is synthesized through the oxidation of durene (1,2,4,5-tetramethylbenzene). Common oxidizing agents used for this process include potassium permanganate or nitric acid.

Pyromellitic acid is primarily used as a precursor in the production of polymers, particularly polyimides. These high-performance polymers are known for their excellent thermal stability, mechanical strength, and electrical insulation properties. They find applications in aerospace, electronics, and automotive industries. Pyromellitic dianhydride, derived from pyromellitic acid by dehydration, is the key monomer for many polyimide syntheses.
