Pyörrytyksiä, known medically as syncope, refers to a temporary loss of consciousness caused by a sudden drop in blood flow to the brain. This sensation is often preceded by symptoms such as dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, blurred vision, and cold sweats. The episode is typically brief, lasting only a few seconds to a minute, and is followed by a rapid recovery.

The underlying causes of pyörrytyksiä are varied. Common triggers include orthostatic hypotension, which is a sudden drop in blood pressure upon standing up, often due to dehydration or certain medications. Vasovagal syncope is another frequent cause, characterized by a reaction to specific stimuli like pain, fear, or prolonged standing, leading to a drop in heart rate and blood pressure. Cardiac issues, such as arrhythmias or structural heart problems, can also impair the heart's ability to pump blood effectively, leading to syncope. Neurological conditions, though less common, can also be a factor.

Diagnosis typically involves a thorough medical history, physical examination, and sometimes further tests like an electrocardiogram (ECG), blood tests, or an autonomic function test to identify the specific cause. Treatment depends on the underlying reason for the syncope. For many, simple lifestyle adjustments like staying hydrated, avoiding triggers, and slowly changing positions may suffice. In cases involving cardiac or neurological issues, more specific medical interventions are necessary to manage the condition and prevent recurrence.
