They are distinct from phrasing marks, which guide the musical interpretation of a melodic line. Pustenäkkejä are purely functional, serving the practical need for a singer to inhale air to sustain a musical passage.

The most common symbol for a pustentäkki is a comma-like mark, often placed slightly above the staff or directly on it. However, composers may employ other symbols or even written instructions to denote breathing points. The placement of a pustentäkki is typically determined by the musical phrase, aiming to interrupt the flow as minimally as possible while ensuring the singer has sufficient air.
