Punktueerimise, also known as punctuation, refers to the system of symbols used in writing to separate sentences and their elements, and to clarify meaning. These marks guide the reader, indicating pauses, stops, and the relationship between different parts of a sentence. Common punctuation marks include the period (.), comma (,), question mark (?), exclamation point (!), semicolon (;), colon (:), and apostrophe (').

The period marks the end of a declarative or imperative sentence. The comma is used to separate items in a list, clauses, and to set off introductory phrases or non-essential elements. Question marks denote the end of an interrogative sentence, while exclamation points convey strong emotion or emphasis. The semicolon can join two closely related independent clauses, and the colon is often used to introduce a list, explanation, or quotation. Apostrophes indicate possession or form contractions.

Proper use of punctuation is crucial for clear and effective communication. Incorrect punctuation can alter the intended meaning of a sentence, leading to confusion or misinterpretation.
