Pugachev, born Yemelyan Ivanovich Pugachev, was a Don Cossack who led a great peasant revolt in Russia between 1773 and 1775. He claimed to be Tsar Peter III, the deposed husband of Catherine the Great. The rebellion, known as the Pugachevshchina, gained widespread support among serfs, Cossacks, and Old Believers who were dissatisfied with serfdom and the autocratic rule of Catherine.
