Príliv

Príliv is the Slovak word for tide, referring to the rhythmic rise and fall of sea levels caused by the gravitational forces of the Moon and Sun. This phenomenon is most pronounced in oceans and large bodies of water.

There are two main types of tides: flood tide and ebb tide. Flood tide occurs when the water level rises, moving towards the shore. Ebb tide is the opposite, when the water level falls, receding from the shore. The cycle of tides typically involves two flood tides and two ebb tides approximately every 24 hours and 50 minutes, due to the Earth's rotation and the Moon's orbit.

The strength of the tides is influenced by the alignment of the Sun and Moon. Spring tides occur when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned, resulting in higher high tides and lower low tides. Neap tides happen when the Sun and Moon are at right angles to Earth, leading to less extreme tidal ranges.

Tides have significant impacts on coastal ecosystems, navigation, and coastal engineering. They play a role in mixing ocean waters, supporting intertidal life, and influencing the erosion and deposition of sediments along coastlines. Many coastal communities have developed infrastructure and practices to accommodate tidal movements.
