In a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), the membrane separates the anode and cathode. At the anode, a fuel like hydrogen is oxidized, producing protons and electrons. At the cathode, protons, electrons, and an oxidant like oxygen combine to form water. The proton conductivity of the membrane is essential for the efficient operation of the fuel cell.

Similarly, in a proton exchange membrane electrolyzer (PEME), the process is reversed to produce hydrogen. Water is split using electrical energy. The membrane facilitates the transport of protons from the anode to the cathode, where they combine with electrons to form hydrogen gas.

The performance of devices utilizing protonivaihtokytköksinä is heavily dependent on the membrane's properties, including its proton conductivity, mechanical strength, chemical stability, and water management capabilities. Common materials for these membranes include perfluorosulfonic acid polymers, such as Nafion.
