Protonikiinnitys

Protonikiinnitys, often translated as proton attachment, is a chemical process where a proton (H+) is added to a molecule or atom. This results in the formation of a positively charged species, known as a protonated species or a conjugate acid. The addition of a proton typically occurs at a site on the molecule that possesses a lone pair of electrons, such as an atom of nitrogen, oxygen, or sulfur. This lone pair can readily form a coordinate covalent bond with the proton.

The process of protonikiinnitys is fundamental in many areas of chemistry, including acid-base reactions, organic chemistry mechanisms, and spectroscopy. For example, in acid-base chemistry, a Brønsted-Lowry acid is defined as a proton donor, and a Brønsted-Lowry base is a species that accepts a proton.
