Protonenaufnahme, also known as proton capture, is a nuclear reaction in which a nucleus captures a proton, typically from a hydrogen atom. This process is fundamental in various astrophysical phenomena, including stellar nucleosynthesis and the proton-proton chain reaction, which is a primary mechanism for energy production in stars like our Sun.

In the proton-proton chain reaction, which dominates in stars with masses similar to or less than that of the Sun, protons combine to form deuterium, which then captures another proton to form helium-3. This helium-3 can either capture another proton to form helium-4 or combine with another helium-3 to form helium-4 and two protons. The overall reaction sequence can be summarized as follows:

1. p + p → d + e+ + νe

2. d + p → 3He + γ

3. 3He + 3He → 4He + p + p

Where p represents a proton, d represents a deuterium nucleus, e+ represents a positron, νe represents an electron neutrino, 3He represents a helium-3 nucleus, γ represents a gamma ray, and 4He represents a helium-4 nucleus.

Proton capture is also a key process in the CNO cycle, which is another important energy production mechanism in stars more massive than the Sun. In this cycle, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen isotopes act as catalysts to facilitate the conversion of hydrogen into helium.

The study of proton capture reactions is crucial for understanding stellar evolution and the nucleosynthesis of elements. Experimental and theoretical investigations of these reactions help astronomers and astrophysicists refine their models of stellar interiors and the cosmic abundance of elements.
