Protokieli
Protokieli is a term used in linguistics to refer to a hypothetical ancestral language from which other languages are believed to have descended. The concept of a protolanguage is central to the historical-comparative method, a technique used to reconstruct these ancient languages by analyzing similarities and differences in their descendant languages. For example, Proto-Indo-European is the reconstructed protolanguage for a vast family of languages that includes English, Spanish, Russian, and Hindi. Linguists work by identifying systematic sound correspondences and shared vocabulary between related languages. By reversing these changes, they can infer the likely form of the words and sounds in the protolanguage. While protolanguages themselves are not directly attested, their reconstruction provides significant insights into language evolution, migration patterns, and the cultural connections between ancient peoples. The accuracy of these reconstructions depends on the quality and quantity of evidence from daughter languages.
