Proteinoidimikrosfäärejä, often translated as proteinoid microspheres, are important entities in the study of abiogenesis, the process by which life arises from non-living matter. These structures are formed when proteinoids, which are polymers of amino acids, are heated in the presence of water. Upon cooling, these proteinoids aggregate into spherical or subspherical structures resembling primitive cells.

These microspheres exhibit several characteristics that make them analogous to early life forms. They possess a boundary that separates their internal environment from the external one, similar to a cell membrane. They can also absorb molecules from their surroundings and even exhibit simple catalytic activity, processing substances within their structure. Furthermore, under certain conditions, proteinoid microspheres can bud or divide, mimicking asexual reproduction.

The formation of proteinoid microspheres is a key concept in the Oparin-Haldane hypothesis and subsequent research on the origin of life. This hypothesis suggests that early Earth's atmosphere, rich in simple organic molecules, could have undergone chemical reactions to form more complex polymers like proteinoids. These polymers, in turn, could have self-assembled into microspheres, providing a favorable environment for the development of more complex biochemical processes. While not alive themselves, proteinoid microspheres serve as a valuable model for understanding the steps involved in the transition from non-living chemistry to the first primitive cells.
