Proteiinisäietyyppiä refers to a classification system for protein filaments within cells. These filaments are dynamic structures that play crucial roles in maintaining cell shape, enabling cell movement, and facilitating intracellular transport. The main types of protein filaments are actin filaments (also known as microfilaments), intermediate filaments, and microtubules.

Actin filaments are the thinnest of the cytoskeletal elements, typically about 7 nanometers in diameter. They are primarily composed of the protein actin and are involved in muscle contraction, cell crawling, and cytokinesis. They form a network just beneath the plasma membrane and also extend into cellular projections like microvilli and pseudopods.

Intermediate filaments are of intermediate diameter, ranging from 8 to 12 nanometers. They are a diverse group, with different cell types utilizing different protein subunits, such as keratins, vimentin, or neurofilaments. Their main function is to provide mechanical strength to cells and tissues, resisting stretching and maintaining cell integrity.

Microtubules are the largest filaments, with a diameter of about 25 nanometers. They are hollow tubes made of tubulin protein subunits. Microtubules are essential for maintaining cell shape, forming the internal framework of cilia and flagella, and segregating chromosomes during cell division. They also serve as tracks for motor proteins to transport vesicles and organelles within the cell. The dynamic assembly and disassembly of these proteiinisäietyyppiä structures are critical for a wide range of cellular processes.
