Prosessvariabler are measurable quantities within a process that can change over time. They are fundamental to understanding, controlling, and optimizing industrial and manufacturing operations. Common examples include temperature, pressure, flow rate, concentration, level, and speed. These variables are often monitored using sensors and instruments that translate physical phenomena into electrical signals.

The purpose of monitoring process variables is to ensure that a process operates within desired parameters, maintaining product quality, safety, and efficiency. Deviations from setpoints can indicate problems such as equipment malfunction, incorrect material input, or changes in environmental conditions. By tracking these variables, operators and automated control systems can make adjustments to bring the process back into alignment.

Control systems, such as those utilizing PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) controllers, continuously compare the measured value of a process variable to its desired setpoint. If a difference exists, the controller calculates and applies a corrective action to the manipulated variable, which is a controllable aspect of the process designed to influence the process variable. For instance, if the temperature in a reactor is too low, the control system might increase the flow of steam to the heating jacket.

Analyzing historical process variable data can reveal trends, identify recurring issues, and provide insights for process improvement. This data-driven approach is crucial for predictive maintenance, troubleshooting, and achieving continuous improvement in process performance. Understanding and effectively managing process variables is therefore a cornerstone of modern industrial automation.
