Programfag

Programfag is a term used in the Norwegian education system to describe the program-specific subjects studied as part of upper secondary education (videregående opplæring). The term refers to specialized modules within a given program and is distinct from fellesfag, the common compulsory subjects that all students take.

In videregående opplæring, students follow a program track, such as vocational programs (yrkesfag) or theoretical studies tracks. Each program comprises fellesfag and programfag. Programfag are designed to provide practical skills and knowledge directly relevant to a chosen field, and the content varies by program and county. Examples of programfag include modules focused on trade-specific techniques, workplace safety, customer service, or design and crafts, depending on the program.

Assessment of programfag is through a combination of tests, assignments, and practical demonstrations. The results contribute to the final grade for the program and form part of the student's Vitnemål, the certificate awarded upon completing videregående opplæring. Completion typically enables entry to apprenticeships or further education, depending on the program type and grades.

The concept of programfag emerged with educational reforms in Norway in the early 2000s to structure upper secondary education into common and program-specific components. While national guidelines set the framework, the exact programfag offered and their content are implemented locally by schools and counties.
