Privateer
A privateer is a private person or privately owned vessel that is authorized by a government to attack enemy shipping during wartime. This authorization, granted through letters of marque and reprisal, allowed privateers to capture enemy ships and cargo as prizes, which could be sold and the proceeds distributed among owners and crew according to a predefined share.
