Prishtina

Prishtina, also known as Pristina in English and Priština in Serbian, is the capital and largest city of Kosovo. It is located in the eastern part of the country, on the Lumbardhi river in the Prishtina Plain, and serves as Kosovo's political, economic, and cultural center.

In Albanian the city is Prishtinë; in English it is Prishtina; in Serbian it is Priština. The city has developed as a regional hub with multilingual institutions and a history shaped by Ottoman, Balkan, and modern Kosovo contexts.

Prishtina has a long history with evidence of settlement in ancient times, later part of the medieval Serbian state, then under Ottoman rule for centuries. After World War II it grew as a regional capital within Yugoslavia, and after Kosovo's administration it became the capital of the Republic of Kosovo.

The city has a predominantly ethnic Albanian population, with minority communities including Serbs, Bosniaks, Roma and Turks. Prishtina is noted for its universities, cultural venues and media outlets. It hosts annual festivals and serves as a focal point for Kosovo's political life.

Key institutions include the government and parliament of Kosovo, ministries, and the University of Prishtina. The economy centers on services, education and public administration, with growing sectors in information technology and entrepreneurship. Prishtina is connected by road and air via Pristina International Airport Adem Jashari.
