Primacord

Primacord is a brand-name detonating cord widely used to transmit a detonation wave and initiate multiple explosive charges. It is designed to be laid along bores, surfaces, or networks and initiated by a blasting cap or detonator, enabling synchronized or staged ignition of connected charges. It sees use in mining, quarrying, demolition, and military engineering.

Composition and performance: The core is typically PETN (pentaerythritol tetranitrate), surrounded by a protective jacket that provides strength and flexibility. The high detonation velocity of PETN allows rapid, near-simultaneous initiation of connected charges. Detonating cords are supplied in various lengths and thicknesses, and can be used to span long distances in a single run.

History: Primacord originated as a branded detonating cord developed in the 20th century by DuPont and later produced by other manufacturers under the Primacord name. The term has become widely used to refer to detonating cord in general, sometimes serving as a generic descriptor for this class of initiation systems.
