Pretubular refers to a stage in early embryonic development, specifically before the formation of definitive kidney tubules. During this period, the developing kidney, known as the metanephros, is undergoing a complex process of differentiation. Cells that will eventually form the renal tubules are present in a more primitive, undifferentiated state. This pretubular phase is characterized by the aggregation of mesenchymal cells that are destined to give rise to the nephronic structures, including the tubules and glomeruli. The precise molecular signals and cellular interactions that govern this transition from pretubular to tubular structures are crucial for proper kidney organogenesis. Disruptions during the pretubular stage can lead to congenital kidney abnormalities.
