Premolart

Premolars are a type of tooth located in the mouth between the canines and the molars. Humans typically have eight premolars, with two on each side of the upper jaw and two on each side of the lower jaw. These teeth are also known as bicuspids, as they generally have two cusps, although some can have more. The first premolar is situated behind the canine, and the second premolar is behind the first.

Premolars play a crucial role in the mastication process. They assist in breaking down food into smaller pieces, which aids digestion. Their structure combines features of both canines and molars, making them versatile for tearing and grinding. The front premolars, closer to the front of the mouth, tend to be more involved in tearing, while the back premolars have broader surfaces for grinding.

In the deciduous (baby) teeth, premolars are not present. They erupt later, replacing the deciduous molars. The eruption pattern usually sees the first premolars appearing around age 10-12, followed by the second premolars shortly after. Like other teeth, premolars are susceptible to decay and gum disease if not properly cared for. Their health is essential for overall oral hygiene and efficient eating.
