Prediagenetic

Prediagenetic is an adjective used in geology and sedimentology to describe processes, conditions, or features that occur before diagenesis, the set of physical, chemical, and biological changes that alter sediments after deposition and before metamorphism. Prediagenetic processes are those acting in the pre-burial or shallow subsurface environment prior to diagenetic alteration, such as surface weathering of source rocks, grain abrasion and weathering during erosion and transport, and coatings or alterations that exist before burial.

The term helps distinguish pre-existing conditions from changes that occur during diagenesis itself, which typically involve compaction, dissolution, cementation, and mineralogical reorganization under increasing temperature and pressure. Prediagenetic features may influence subsequent diagenetic pathways by setting grain size distribution, porosity, mineral surface area, and the availability of reactive surfaces for later reactions. For example, grains weathered in an oxidizing near-surface environment may carry oxidation halos that affect later cementation, or surface coatings on grains can alter cement growth during diagenesis.

Prediagenetic is not a sharply defined stage with discrete boundaries; it is a descriptive label used to separate pre-depositional or near-surface history from diagenetic processes. Usage varies among authors, and some researchers prefer more specific terms such as pre-depositional weathering or early surface conditioning to avoid implying a formal diagenetic phase.
