Politeness theory (Brown & Levinson) analyzes how speakers modulate face needs to maintain social harmony. Other influential ideas include relevance theory (Sperber & Wilson), which emphasizes cognitive effort and contextual relevance in interpreting messages, and discourse pragmatics, which examines how language use ties to coherence and turn-taking.

Methods in pragmatikens range from analysis of naturally occurring speech and corpora to experimental and corpus-based approaches. Researchers examine everyday conversations, media discourse, and multilingual communication to understand how context shapes interpretation, intention, and social meaning. Applications span language teaching, intercultural communication, artificial intelligence and natural language processing, and clinical linguistics, where pragmatic language use is assessed in various disorders.
