Potentiaalikäyrät, often translated as potential curves or potential energy curves, are graphical representations used in chemistry and physics to illustrate the relationship between the potential energy of a system and one or more geometric parameters, typically internuclear distances in molecules. These curves are fundamental to understanding chemical bonding, molecular vibrations, and reaction pathways.

The x-axis of a potential energy curve usually represents a specific molecular coordinate, such as the distance between two atoms in a diatomic molecule. The y-axis represents the potential energy of the system at that particular geometric configuration. For a diatomic molecule, a typical potential energy curve shows a minimum energy at a specific internuclear distance, corresponding to the equilibrium bond length. As the atoms are brought closer together, the repulsive forces between their electron clouds and nuclei increase, leading to a sharp rise in potential energy. Conversely, as the atoms are pulled further apart, the attractive forces of the chemical bond weaken, and the potential energy rises again, approaching the sum of the individual atomic energies.

The shape of the potential energy curve provides crucial information. The depth of the potential well is related to the bond dissociation energy, indicating how much energy is required to break the bond. The curvature at the minimum of the potential well is related to the vibrational frequency of the molecule; a steeper curve implies a higher vibrational frequency. In polyatomic molecules, potential energy surfaces are used, which are multi-dimensional representations of energy as a function of multiple geometric parameters. These surfaces help visualize reaction mechanisms, transition states, and the stability of different molecular conformations.
