For example, the number 1,234,000 can be written in scientific notation as 1.234 x 10^6. Here, 1.234 is the coefficient, and 10^6 means the decimal point was moved six places to the left. Conversely, the number 0.0000567 can be written as 5.67 x 10^-5. In this case, 5.67 is the coefficient, and 10^-5 signifies that the decimal point was moved five places to the right.

This system simplifies calculations involving very large or very small numbers. It also makes it easier to compare the magnitude of different numbers. Scientific notation is especially useful in fields like astronomy, where distances are vast, and in chemistry and physics, where the sizes of atoms and molecules are incredibly small. The use of a consistent format also helps prevent errors in transcription and calculation.
