Postsynapsisella

Postsynapsisella is a genus of bacteria from the family Enterobacteriaceae, first described in 2016. The genus currently includes two species, Postsynapsisella marina and Postsynapsisella aquatica, both of which are marine bacteria. These bacteria are Gram-negative, rod-shaped, and motile by means of a single polar flagellum. They are facultatively anaerobic, meaning they can grow in the presence or absence of oxygen.

Postsynapsisella species are known for their ability to degrade various organic compounds, including aromatic compounds and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). This makes them of interest in bioremediation, the process of using living organisms to clean up environmental pollutants. They have been shown to effectively degrade PAHs in contaminated marine sediments.

The genus Postsynapsisella was named to reflect its close phylogenetic relationship with the genus Synapsisella, another marine bacterium. The name Postsynapsisella is derived from the Latin word "post," meaning "after," and the genus Synapsisella, indicating that Postsynapsisella is a later branch in the evolutionary tree of marine bacteria.

Postsynapsisella species are typically isolated from marine environments, such as sediments and water columns. They are often found in association with other marine bacteria and archaea, suggesting a complex microbial community structure in these habitats. The isolation and characterization of Postsynapsisella species have contributed to our understanding of the diversity and metabolic potential of marine bacteria.
