Polymethylenebased refers to materials or structures that are primarily composed of repeating methylene groups (-CH2-). This simple repeating unit forms the backbone of a wide variety of organic compounds, most notably polyethylene, a ubiquitous plastic. In the context of materials science, polymethylenebased often implies polymers where the dominant structural feature is a long chain of these methylene units.

Polyethylene, synthesized from ethylene monomers (C2H4), exists in various forms such as low-density polyethylene (LDPE), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE).
