Polymeeristymistä, also known as polymerization, is a chemical process where small molecules called monomers react together to form a long chain-like molecule called a polymer. This process is fundamental to the creation of many common materials, including plastics, rubber, and synthetic fibers.

There are several types of polymerization, broadly categorized as addition polymerization and condensation polymerization. In addition polymerization, monomers add to one another in a way that the repeating unit of the polymer has the same atoms as the original monomer. This process often involves a catalyst or initiator. In condensation polymerization, monomers join together by eliminating a small molecule, such as water or methanol. The repeating unit of the polymer formed through condensation polymerization contains fewer atoms than the original monomers.

The conditions under which polymerization occurs, such as temperature, pressure, and the presence of catalysts, can significantly influence the properties of the resulting polymer. Factors like chain length, branching, and cross-linking all contribute to the final material's strength, flexibility, and other characteristics. Understanding and controlling these polymerization processes allows for the tailored design of polymers for specific applications, from everyday packaging to advanced engineering components.
