Polykondensaatiota is a chemical process where monomers react to form a polymer with the simultaneous release of a small molecule, such as water, methanol, or hydrogen chloride. This is in contrast to polyaddition, where monomers combine without the formation of a byproduct. The reaction typically involves functional groups on the monomers, such as hydroxyl, carboxyl, or amino groups, that can react with each other.

During polycondensation, repeating structural units are formed in the polymer chain, and each linkage formed is accompanied by the elimination of a small molecule. The molecular weight of the polymer increases as more monomers are added. The process can be catalyzed by acids or bases, depending on the specific monomers and reaction conditions.
