Polumerointireaktio

Polumerointireaktio, often translated as polymerization reaction, is a chemical process where small molecules called monomers link together to form a long chain-like molecule called a polymer. This process involves the formation of new covalent bonds between the monomer units. The properties of the resulting polymer are significantly different from those of the original monomers, often exhibiting enhanced strength, flexibility, or elasticity. Polymerization can occur through various mechanisms, broadly categorized into addition polymerization and condensation polymerization.

Addition polymerization involves the sequential addition of monomers to a growing polymer chain without the loss of any atoms. This typically occurs with monomers containing double or triple bonds, which can open up to form single bonds with adjacent monomers. Free radical polymerization, cationic polymerization, and anionic polymerization are common types of addition polymerization.

Condensation polymerization, on the other hand, involves the reaction between monomers with the elimination of a small molecule, such as water, methanol, or hydrogen chloride, as a byproduct. This process often occurs between monomers with functional groups like hydroxyl, carboxyl, or amino groups. Examples include the formation of polyesters and polyamides. The conditions under which polymerization occurs, such as temperature, pressure, and the presence of catalysts or initiators, play a crucial role in determining the rate of reaction and the characteristics of the final polymer.
