The term combines polarisaatio (polarization) and pakoa (escape) in Finnish, highlighting the idea that polarization information can appear to escape from the optical system. It is used to describe depolarization behaviors that are not fully explained by conventional models of random scattering or birefringence alone.

The phenomenon arises when coupling between the electromagnetic field and environmental degrees of freedom—such as structural disorder, dynamic fluctuations, or mode mixing—causes the Stokes vector to evolve in ways that mimic partial leakage of polarization. Models often introduce a parameter called the Pakoa efficiency that quantifies the fraction of polarization information that escapes into the environment. The concept can be represented with generalized depolarization matrices, extending standard Mueller calculus to capture nonlocal or time-dependent effects.
