Polümeerimisega is a chemical process in which small molecules, called monomers, chemically bond to one another to form a long chain-like molecule, called a polymer. This process can occur naturally, such as in the formation of DNA or proteins, or it can be induced artificially through various chemical reactions. The type of monomers used and the conditions under which the polymerization occurs determine the properties of the resulting polymer.

There are several main types of polymerization. Addition polymerization involves monomers adding to one another without the loss of any atoms. Chain-growth polymerization is a subtype where a reactive center on a monomer initiates the polymerization, and the polymer chain grows rapidly. Condensation polymerization, on the other hand, involves monomers reacting to form a polymer with the simultaneous release of a small molecule, such as water or methanol. Step-growth polymerization is a related type where monomers react in a series of steps to form dimers, trimers, and eventually longer chains.

Polymers are ubiquitous in modern life and have a vast range of applications. Plastics, rubbers, synthetic fibers, and adhesives are all examples of polymers. The specific properties of a polymer, such as its strength, flexibility, thermal resistance, and solubility, can be tailored by controlling the polymerization process and the choice of monomers. This ability to engineer materials with specific characteristics makes polymerization a cornerstone of materials science and chemical engineering, enabling the creation of everything from everyday consumer goods to advanced technological components.
