Pohjanmaa

Pohjanmaa is a historical and geographical region in northern Finland, traditionally comprising the area of present-day North Ostrobothnia. The name translates literally as "north country" and reflects the region's position north of the ancient southern Finnish territory. The capital of the historical region, Oulu, has long been a central trade and cultural hub.

The area has a long history of settlement, with archaeological finds indicating habitation since the Stone Age. During the Middle Ages it became a part of the Kingdom of Sweden, and later the region fell under Russian rule after the Finnish War of 1808–1809. After Finland declared independence in 1917, Pohjanmaa became an important part of the newly formed nation. During World War II, the region experienced significant military activity, including battles during the Winter War and the Continuation War, and received settlers from other parts of Finland after wartime evacuations.

Economically, Pohjanmaa has historically depended on forestry, agriculture and fishing. In modern times, Oulu has evolved into a major technology and research center, hosting universities and high‑tech companies. This shift has boosted the region’s economy and attracted skilled workers from across Finland and abroad.

The population of Pohjanmaa is predominantly Finnish-speaking, with a small Swedish-speaking minority. Cultural life is strong, featuring folk music, traditional dances and festivals that celebrate the region’s maritime and agrarian heritage. Local cuisine includes dishes such as “pulla,” a sweet bread, and various fish preparations reflecting the area’s proximity to the Gulf of Bothnia.

Pohjanmaa remains central to Finland’s cultural and economic landscape, balancing its historical roots with contemporary technological development.
