Podmínná

Podmínné is a term that appears in some Czech linguistic sources to refer to matters related to condition or conditional expressions. It is derived from the noun podmínka, meaning condition. In contemporary grammar, the more common forms used are podmíněný, podmiňovací, or podmíněné, and podmínné as an independent category is relatively rare or regional. The term is typically encountered in discussions of conditional clauses and the conditional mood.

In practice, the expression podmínné features most often in two areas. First, in phrases describing conditional clauses, where the noun adjective combination appears as podmíněné věty (conditional sentences). These sentences express a condition under which the main clause takes place and are introduced by conjunctions such as pokud, jestliže, kdyby. For example: Pokud prší, zůstanu doma. Second, in reference to the conditional mood, sometimes described by phrases such as podmiňovací způsob, which denotes verb forms used to express hypothetical, wished-for, or contingent actions. Examples include would-like constructions such as bych šel or byl bych šel in Czech.

Overall, podmínné is not the standard label in modern grammar for these concepts. The widely used terms are podmíněné věty and podmiňovací způsob. When encountered, podmínné is typically understood as an alternative or historical variant referring to condition-related forms rather than a distinct, widely taught category.
