Pneumotaxic

Pneumotaxic refers to a neural circuit in the brainstem that plays a crucial role in regulating respiration. Specifically, the pneumotaxic center is located in the upper pons and works in conjunction with the apneustic center, also in the pons, and the dorsal and ventral respiratory groups in the medulla oblongata. Its primary function is to control the rate and depth of breathing.

The pneumotaxic center limits the duration of inspiration by inhibiting the firing of inspiratory neurons in the medulla. This action, in turn, helps to regulate the overall breathing rate. When the pneumotaxic center is active, it signals the end of inspiration, allowing exhalation to begin sooner. This prevents the lungs from over-inflating. Conversely, if the pneumotaxic center's activity is reduced or absent, inspiration can be prolonged, leading to deeper breaths, which can be observed in certain physiological states like heavy exercise or sleep.

The precise mechanisms by which the pneumotaxic center modulates respiratory activity are complex and involve interactions with various sensory inputs, including stretch receptors in the lungs.
