Pleystein

Pleystein is a municipality in the district of Erzgebirgskreis in the Free State of Saxony, Germany. It lies in the southern Ore Mountains, roughly 10 kilometres north of Annaberg-Buchholz and about 35 kilometres west of the Saxon capital Leipzig. The town covers an area of 14.7 square kilometres and sits at an elevation of approximately 570 metres above sea level. As of the latest census, its population is around 1,400 residents. Postal code 09579 and area code 03743 are used for communication services. The licence plate prefix for vehicles registered here is ERZ. The current mayor, elected for the term 2022–2029, is Uwe Bock.

The earliest documented reference to Pleystein dates back to the 13th century, when it was mentioned in a royal charter. During the Middle Ages it developed as a small mining and forestry centre, with silver and copper extraction playing a significant role in its economy. The town’s historical architecture includes a Romanesque parish church that was considerably expanded in the 15th century, and a medieval castle that now serves as a cultural venue. In the 19th century, rail connections were established, linking Pleystein to larger urban centres and fostering tourism in the Ore Mountains.

In contemporary times, Pleystein sustains a modest local economy. Agriculture, forestry, and small scale manufacturing remain primary activities, while seasonal tourism contributes to commercial revenue.
