Pleuraõõned
Pleuraõõned refer to the pleural cavities, which are the potential spaces between the two layers of pleura, the serous membranes that line the lungs and the chest wall. The visceral pleura covers the outer surface of the lungs, while the parietal pleura lines the inner surface of the chest wall, diaphragm, and mediastinum. Normally, these pleural cavities contain a very small amount of pleural fluid, a lubricant that allows the lungs to move smoothly against the chest wall during respiration. This fluid reduces friction and facilitates effortless breathing. Each lung has its own pleural cavity, and they are completely separate from each other. Any accumulation of air in the pleural cavity is called a pneumothorax, and an excess of fluid is known as a pleural effusion. These conditions can impair lung function and require medical attention. The pressure within the pleural cavity is typically subatmospheric, which helps to keep the lungs inflated. Diseases affecting the pleura can lead to pain, shortness of breath, and other respiratory symptoms.
