Plattenzellen

Plattenzellen, also known as pavement cells or epidermal cells, are a type of cell found in plant tissues, particularly in the epidermis of leaves and stems. These cells are typically flattened and irregularly shaped, fitting together like a mosaic to form a protective outer layer. Their primary function is to provide mechanical support and protection to the underlying tissues.

The arrangement of Plattenzellen can vary. In some plants, they may be arranged in regular rows, while in others, they form a more haphazard pattern. The cell walls of Plattenzellen are usually thickened, which contributes to their protective role. They are living cells and are metabolically active, though their metabolic activity is generally lower than that of cells in other plant tissues.

Plattenzellen can also play a role in regulating gas exchange, although this function is more prominent in specialized epidermal cells like guard cells that surround stomata.
