Platinumrhodium

Platinumrhodium is a binary alloy consisting of platinum and rhodium. The proportions of platinum and rhodium in the alloy can vary widely depending on the intended application, but commonly include 90% platinum and 10% rhodium, or 80% platinum and 20% rhodium. This alloy is known for its exceptional hardness, high melting point, and excellent resistance to corrosion and oxidation.

The primary use of platinumrhodium alloys is in the manufacturing of thermocouples, particularly Type B thermocouples, which are used for measuring high temperatures. These thermocouples are essential in industries such as glass manufacturing, steel production, and petrochemical processing where extreme heat is encountered. The alloy's stability at elevated temperatures and its resistance to chemical attack make it ideal for these demanding environments.

Beyond thermocouples, platinumrhodium alloys also find application in the production of catalytic converters for automobiles. Their catalytic properties aid in converting harmful exhaust gases into less toxic substances. Furthermore, the alloy is utilized in certain specialized laboratory equipment, such as crucibles and ignition wires, due to its high melting point and inertness.
