Plasmonlägen

Plasmonlägen, often referred to as plasmon modes, are collective oscillations of conduction electrons in a metal or doped semiconductor. These oscillations can be excited by electromagnetic radiation, such as light, when the frequency of the radiation matches the natural frequency of the electron oscillations. This resonance phenomenon leads to enhanced absorption and scattering of light at specific wavelengths.

There are two main types of plasmon modes. Surface plasmons are confined to the interface between a metal and a dielectric material. They arise from the collective oscillation of electrons at the surface, creating a charge density that oscillates along the interface. Bulk plasmons, on the other hand, are oscillations that occur throughout the volume of the metallic material.

The excitation of plasmonlägen is highly dependent on the material's properties, including the electron density and the dielectric environment. When plasmonlägen are excited, they can lead to a significant concentration of electromagnetic fields near the surface of the metal. This field enhancement has led to numerous applications in fields such as surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), nanoscale optical sensing, and plasmonic photocatalysis. The study of plasmonlägen is a key area within nanoscience and nanotechnology.
