Plasma glucose level, often referred to as blood sugar, is a measure of the amount of glucose present in the blood. Glucose is a simple sugar that serves as the primary source of energy for the body's cells. This level is tightly regulated by hormones, primarily insulin and glucagon, produced by the pancreas. Routine checks are often recommended for individuals with a family history of diabetes, those who are overweight, or display symptoms suggestive of glucose regulation issues. Specialized tests like fasting plasma glucose, random plasma glucose, and oral glucose tolerance tests are used to assess glucose metabolism and diagnose conditions related to blood sugar regulation.
