Placentális refers to mammals that belong to the infraclass Placentalia. This group is characterized by the presence of a placenta, a temporary organ that develops in the uterus of pregnant female mammals. The placenta facilitates the transfer of nutrients, oxygen, and waste products between the mother and the fetus, allowing for extended gestation and the birth of more developed young. Placental mammals are the most diverse and widespread group of mammals, encompassing a vast array of species including humans, dogs, cats, rodents, bats, whales, and primates. They are distinguished from marsupials (infraclass Metatheria) and monotremes (infraclass Monotremata) by their mode of reproduction. In placental mammals, the embryo develops within the uterus for a longer period, nourished by the placenta, and is born in a relatively advanced state of development. This reproductive strategy has contributed to the evolutionary success and diversification of placental mammals across nearly all terrestrial and aquatic environments.
