The Pitot-Static System is a crucial component of an aircraft's flight instrument system, providing essential airspeed information. It operates by measuring the difference between two pressures: dynamic pressure and static pressure. Dynamic pressure is derived from the impact of air on a forward-facing opening, typically a Pitot tube, located on the aircraft's exterior. Static pressure, on the other hand, is measured from ports that sense the undisturbed ambient air pressure.

The Pitot tube collects the total pressure, which is the sum of static pressure and dynamic pressure. This total pressure is then fed into the airspeed indicator. The static ports measure only the static pressure. The airspeed indicator, also known as the Air Data Computer (ADC) in modern aircraft, uses the difference between these two pressures to calculate the indicated airspeed. This difference is directly proportional to the dynamic pressure, which in turn is related to the aircraft's speed through the air.

Accurate functioning of the Pitot-Static System is paramount for safe flight. Blockages in the Pitot tube or static ports, such as those caused by ice, insects, or debris, can lead to erroneous airspeed readings. If the Pitot tube is blocked, the airspeed indicator will show a decrease in speed, eventually reading zero if the blockage is complete. If the static ports are blocked, the airspeed indicator will typically show an increase in speed as altitude increases. Pilots are trained to recognize and manage these potential malfunctions, often using backup instruments or specific procedures to maintain control of the aircraft.
