Pintaaktiivinen

Pintaaktiivinen is a Finnish term that translates to "surface-active" or "surfactant" in English. It refers to a substance that reduces the surface tension between two liquids, between a gas and a liquid, or between a liquid and a solid. This reduction in surface tension is due to the unique molecular structure of surfactants, which typically have a hydrophilic (water-attracting) head and a hydrophobic (water-repelling) tail.

When introduced into a liquid, such as water, pintaaktiivinen molecules tend to orient themselves at the interface. The hydrophilic heads face the water, while the hydrophobic tails are repelled by the water and may orient towards the air or an oil phase.
