Pingtyökalu

Pingtyökalu is a network diagnostic utility used to test the reachability of a host on an Internet Protocol (IP) network. It measures the round-trip time for messages sent from the originating host to a destination computer that are echoed back to the source. The name "ping" comes from the sonar sound a submarine makes. The tool works by sending Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) echo request packets to the target host and listening for ICMP echo reply packets. The response time, measured in milliseconds, indicates the latency of the connection.

When a user initiates a ping command, they specify a target host, which can be an IP address or a domain name. The pingtyökalu then sends a series of these echo request packets. For each packet sent, it records the time it takes to receive a reply. If a host is unreachable or not responding, the pingtyökalu will typically report that the request timed out. This can indicate network connectivity issues, firewall blocking, or the target host being offline.

The output of a pingtyökalu typically includes the IP address of the target, the size of the packets sent, the time-to-live (TTL) value, and the round-trip time for each successful reply. It also usually provides a summary of statistics, such as the number of packets sent, received, lost, and the minimum, maximum, and average round-trip times. Pingtyökalu is a fundamental tool for network administrators and users to troubleshoot network problems and assess network performance.
